What I love about this story is it tackles a topic that affects millions of couples, yet rarely gets discussed from a husband’s perspective.

Most conversations about perimenopause and menopause focus on the women experiencing it, and rightfully so.

However, behind many of those stories is a partner trying to understand what is happening to the person they love while quietly struggling with their own questions, fears, and misconceptions.

Long before Simon Salt became a Certified Menopause Coach, he was simply a husband watching his marriage change.

Intimacy felt different. Communication became more difficult.

Doctors couldn’t provide answers. The more confused he became, the more he questioned himself and whether he was somehow failing his wife.

What followed was a lesson in empathy, communication, emotional intimacy, and understanding the difference between knowing someone’s symptoms and understanding their experience.

At its core, this isn’t a story about menopause.

It’s a story about marriage and assumptions.

Tonight’s conversation with left me thinking about how much energy people spend managing themselves.

The mental calculations and the second guessing.

The constant pressure to stay in control.

For our guest, that pressure lived inside an eating disorder for more than thirty years. Recovery felt like something that had to be earned through discipline, vigilance, and never letting her guard down.

What struck me most was how differently she views that experience today.

At some point, the focus shifted away from defeating the eating disorder and toward understanding it.

That doesn’t mean the damage wasn’t real or the suffering disappeared.

The consequences were significant, and she was incredibly honest about that throughout the conversation.

What changed was the lens she was looking through.

Instead of asking, “How do I beat this?” she began asking, “Why did this become necessary in the first place?”

That question opened the door to a much deeper conversation about shame, anxiety, emotional survival, self compassion, identity, and the need for control.

Listening to her story, I kept thinking about how many people are carrying their own version of that struggle.

An eating disorder may not be part of their story.

Anxiety might be.

Perfectionism might be.

For someone else, it could be the relentless voice that points out every mistake, every flaw, and every reason they are still not enough.

Different struggles.

The same exhaustion and desire to feel safe.

The same hope that life might feel lighter if they could just figure out what is wrong with them.

Tonight’s conversation challenged that idea.

Perhaps healing begins when we spend less time trying to fix ourselves and more time understanding ourselves.

My Dad is a Superhero was not just a story I read. It was a story I lived, and finally understood.

I shared what it looked like to grow up in a home where illness changed everything, and how, in the middle of that, my dad became more than a father. He became caregiver, provider, protector, and the person who kept our family moving when nothing about our situation felt stable.

As a kid, I saw tasks getting done. Rides. Meals. Schedules. Presence.

As an adult, I see what it actually was.

Sacrifice. Pressure. Fear.

Love in its most relentless form.

What made tonight even more powerful was having join us to read his poem, The Caregiver’s Lament. His words added another layer.
It brought language to the emotional toll caregivers carry, often in silence, often without recognition.

There was something about hearing that poem alongside this story that made everything land deeper.

Caregiving is not one moment nor one decision.

It is a life that shifts, often without warning, and asks people to keep showing up anyway.

That is what tonight was about.

It was about the father who stayed.

The mother who kept fighting.

The family that adjusted, adapted, and grew up inside something none of us chose.

And the realization, years later, that what I witnessed was not just responsibility.

It was love at a level most people never fully see.

I decided to end the Fatherhood Series with a personal story of my Dad.

Huge THANK YOU to , , and for making this series deeply meaningful and special. You all of a big place in my heart. I will never forget what we created together.

When my mom became sick with Multiple Sclerosis, our family changed in ways I could not fully understand as a child.

Back then, I only saw what was happening on the surface. Rides to practice. Meals getting made. Bills getting paid. My dad showing up the way he always had.

What I understand now is that I was watching a man carry far more than most people could imagine.

He became caregiver, provider, protector, parent, and the person holding our family together while trying to hold himself together too.

That is what this story is about.

It is about the invisible weight so many caregivers carry.

The vows that are tested when life gets hard.

The type of fatherhood built through action, sacrifice, consistency, and love.

I’ll also be reading about my mom, because no story about my father would be complete without the woman he kept choosing through one of the hardest seasons of our lives. She is my rock and it’s because of her I am the woman I am today.

Some stories are shared to be heard.

This one is shared to honor him.

It took me years to understand what caregiving was taking from us.

When I was younger, I didn’t have language for it. I only saw what was happening on the surface.

The doing, the managing, the surviving. I didn’t yet understand that caregiving, especially family caregiving doesn’t just ask for time or effort.
It asks for identity, energy and leads to caregiver burnout long before anyone notices.

I’ve always thought of caregivers as superheroes. It’s my story, my perspective!

This is not because they’re fearless and truthfully most of the time they’re scared shitless.

They give all of themselves to protect and care for someone else. To protective their family and loved ones.

That’s what superheroes do: they put their own needs aside to hold someone else up when they can’t do it alone.

This is a story about my parents and my family.

Before the Villain: Who They Were

Before Multiple Sclerosis entered our lives, my Mom was everything and she still is.

I remember the first day she dropped me off at school. I cried and begged her not to leave. She knelt down and told me she didn’t want to leave either but it was time. What I didn’t know until later was that she cried too. In the hallway. And again when she walked back to the car.

We had a giant lilac bush in the backyard. Every spring, my mom and I waited for it to bloom. She’d grab the gardening shears and a basket, and we’d walk out together, cutting branches and filling vases throughout the house. The smell was pure happiness. It softened everything. It made our family of five smile.

She was energetic. Fun. Always moving.

She ran us kids everywhere, hosted constantly, kept the house together, and somehow did it all with humor and warmth. She was nurturing in a way that made you feel safe just being near her.

She was beautiful slender, striking blue eyes, brown hair worn short, the clearest skin. But it was her presence that stayed with you. Sharp. Sarcastic. Funny. Loving. She didn’t put up with shit, and she was always there.

My Dad was the man.

He ran his own business and still coached all three of our sports teams. He ran community basketball leagues, had bowling nights, and knew everyone.

He coached my traveling basketball team. I’ll never forget one game it was his birthday. We were down by one point with five seconds left. Full-court press style! A teammate stole the ball and passed it to me for a layup at the buzzer. We won.

My Dad ran his big belly onto the court, picked me up, and squeezed me so tight I couldn’t breathe. He wouldn’t let go. He was so proud.

He taught me how to cook by pulling everything out of the fridge and somehow turning it into a real meal and this is something I still do today.

He was handsome. Blue eyes. A belly. Less hair than most. Sometimes shaved, sometimes scruffy. He worked hard, helped anyone who needed it, stood firmly in what he believed. Loving. Generous. Funny. And yes he had a temper when pushed too far. Shit, we all do!

Together, my parents were a force.

Holidays mattered. Birthdays were celebrated. Community functions were fun. Block parties brought everyone together. Our home was stable, loving, and full. They made sure we had what we needed to grow up happy and carefree.

When the Villain Arrived

At just 35, my Mom began to deteriorate — physically, emotionally, and soulfully.

We were young when my mom became ill and forced to mature sooner than we should have.

At first, it didn’t make sense. We couldn’t go places we used to go. It wasn’t her fault. It was the villain, an unknown force that entered her body without invitation, bringing shame and embarrassment into her mind.

I watched my vibrant, energizer-bunny Mom slowly disappear.

Her energy drained, vision changed, mobility became limited and the sense of who she had been began slipping away.

Eventually, a hospital bed had to be placed on the first floor because the stairs were too much.

I watched her lose hope even as she tried to hide it. She wore a smile I know was hard to carry. I heard her cry at night, and I never blamed her. Not once.

I cried too. I think we all did, quietly.

What It Took from My Father

That same summer, my dad won a trip to England through his insurance business. He was excited to take us.

I was convinced I’d meet the Queen. I even wrote her a letter. A lady-in-waiting wrote back formal and polite and explaining the Queen wouldn’t be around if we came. Damn her and her busy schedule!

We never went.

My mom was too sick. Doctors were still running tests. No one could explain what was happening, only that it was getting worse.

I remember my dad’s face when he told us the trip was canceled. Something heavier than disappointment. The moment he realized life was no longer divided into work, family, and rest, it was collapsing into caregiving.

Caregiver.

We were three kids under thirteen, two years apart. He became Driving Miss Daisy.

Sports schedules.

Homework.

Practices and games.

Grocery shopping and meals.

Laundry and cleaning.

Doctor appointments and hospital visits.

Bills.

And a business that still had to run so everything else could stay afloat.

Everything my Mom had done without effort was now his and none of it paused because he was exhausted.

He parented three kids while learning how to care for a wife who was suddenly dependent on him. Helping her move. Helping her rest. Watching her struggle with a body that no longer cooperated.

And underneath it all, he was trying to understand a disease with no timeline and no clear plan.

Caregiving doesn’t come with instructions. It comes with fear and guesswork.

I watched my dad stretch himself thinner than I thought possible.
He absorbed stress so we wouldn’t have to.

And sometimes it broke through as exhaustion, frustration, and silence.

Caregiving didn’t change who he was.

It revealed how much one person can carry.

If you’ve ever loved someone through illness, you already know this weight even if you’ve never called yourself a caregiver.

What It Took from My Mother

Caregiving doesn’t only take from the person giving care.

It takes from the person receiving it too.

I watched my mom lose pieces of herself. Independence disappears slowly one ability replaced by help, one private moment replaced by necessity.

She didn’t just lose mobility. She experienced the emotional toll of caregiving from the other side.

She lost autonomy.

Confidence.

Independence.

The freedom to move through the world without calculation.

There is grief in that few people see. The grief of losing a version of yourself you worked your whole life to love and live.

I watched her stay strong for us. Smile while depleted. Remain present while mourning who she used to be.

Caregiving doesn’t erase pride. It tests it.

What Caregiving Did to Our Family

Caregiving brought us closer. We became a team.

It also changed everything.

It introduced tension, fear, and weight into ordinary moments.
It forced three kids to grow up faster than they wanted.

Arguments that weren’t really arguments.

Silences that said too much.

Moments when everyone was tired and no one knew how to fix it and did not know how to communicate it.

I saw my parents defeated and not because they were weak, but because they were human and overwhelmed by something they never chose.

And still, they stayed.

I once asked my dad why he stayed when many wouldn’t.

He said, “Because I promised your mom when I married her till death do us part.”

Till death do us part! Wow! How can I ever find a man like my Dad?

On top of it all he is still here today for my Mom.

Why They Are Superheroes (my perspective)

Caregivers are superheroes because they keep showing up, even when strength feels out of reach.

They stay when leaving would be easier. Absorb pain so others don’t have to. Give without knowing when relief will come.

My Mom is a superhero because she continues to fight to be here. Living inside long-term illness, relearning herself inside limitations she never chose, still loving us through it all.

After years of falls, hospitalizations, and fear, we faced another breaking point The fucking hardest decision ever for my Dad and us all. That was finding a care facility. We toured over eighty. None felt right. We prayed for safety, for dignity, for people who would treat her like family.

Caregiving doesn’t look heroic while you’re living it, but it looks like love doing its best under impossible conditions.

That kind of courage is invisible but relentless.

My Dad is a superhero because he carried an entire family as a caregiver, provider, and parent all at once. He showed up every day knowing the cost, and paid it anyway.

Caregiving asks for everything.

Time. Energy. Identity. Self.

When people talk about heroes, they usually picture someone being celebrated.

I picture my dad.

A man with too much on his shoulders, who kept going, who honored his vows when no one would have blamed him for leaving.

A man who gave my siblings and me the chance to still feel safe while his own world was changing.

That kind of love changes people. It changed me and it changed all of us.

If you are a caregiver or someone being cared for, you are not invisible.

You are part of a love story most people never fully see. Hell some wouldn’t even consider it one, but it is.

And if you are lucky enough to know someone who carried others through their hardest season, tell them now.

Some superheroes never ask for recognition.

They just spend a lifetime earning it.

Jason shared the heartbreaking loss of his 19 year old daughter, Chloe, and brought listeners into the reality of what grief can look like when tragedy hits a family without warning.

He spoke with honesty about shock, fear, trauma, and the impossible moments no parent should ever have to face.

We talked about what happens when your body and mind are trying to process something too big to understand.

We talked about the decisions people are forced to make while they are still in survival mode.

We also talked about the role family can play when someone is barely able to stand under the weight of what has happened.

Jason also spoke about men and grief. Too many men are taught to keep it together, stay silent, and carry pain alone.

He offered another path, one built on truth, vulnerability, support, and allowing yourself to be fully human in the middle of heartbreak.

One of the most meaningful parts of the conversation was hearing how love continues after loss. Even when someone is gone, the connection, the memories, and the impact they had do not disappear.

This episode is for anyone grieving a child, grieving someone they love, supporting a person in pain, or trying to understand how people survive life altering loss.

It is honest. It is emotional. It is important.

There are some losses that divide life into before and after. The loss of a child is one of them. It changes the language of a family. It changes the nervous system and the way time moves. For many people, it also changes who they believe they are.

Jason’s story does not avoid that truth.

He brings us into a reality no parent should ever have to experience. Losing a child through tragedy is not one feeling or one moment. It can feel like panic in the chest, disbelief in the mind, and pain so sharp it changes the way you move through the world.

What makes this conversation powerful is the honesty inside it.

Jason speaks about standing in front of moments that felt impossible. He speaks about making decisions while grief was still crashing over everyone around him and speaks about loving his daughter so deeply that even after loss, that love still fills every part of the story.

Another part of this conversation matters just as much.

There is also an important message here for men. Many were raised to stay composed, stay silent, and carry pain alone. Jason offers another way. Real strength can include tears, honesty, asking for help, and letting yourself be seen.

This story reaches beyond child loss. Anyone carrying grief can recognize something in it. Some are mourning a person. Some are mourning the life they thought they would have. Some are trying to understand who they became after everything changed.

People need conversations like this. They remind us that pain is part of life, but isolation does not have to be.

The two poems, Shave and Another Anagram, and together they gave us a deeply honest look at fatherhood through two very different lenses.

👉 Read Shave brought us into the future he once imagined with his son. It held the milestones, the ordinary moments, and the version of life many parents assume will naturally unfold. You could feel the tenderness in that poem, along with the grief that comes when life moves in another direction.

👉 Read Another Anagram brought us into the reality he lives every day with Bray Bray, who was born with the rare genetic disorder GNAI1. This poem carried the weight of caregiving, constant awareness, and the kind of love that remains fully present when every moment matters.

What made tonight so meaningful was not only the contrast between the two poems, but the truth they revealed together.

Life does not always follow the path we pictured. Love does not disappear when that happens. In many cases, it becomes stronger, deeper, and more intentional.

Chris gave language to a version of fatherhood that deserves to be seen.

He reminded us that strength is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like staying engaged. Sometimes it looks like adapting. Sometimes it looks like continuing to show up in circumstances that ask everything from you.

We talk about fatherhood in a very specific way.

But we do not talk enough about what happens when life asks more of a man than just being strong.

When strength is not enough and the role he has been given does not match the reality he is living.

Because fatherhood is not just built in the good moments.
It is built in the moments that break you open.

And most of those moments…they go unseen.

This month inside Let’s Get Unstuck, we are telling the stories that live underneath the surface of fatherhood.

The ones that do not make it into conversations.

The ones that men are often expected to carry without language, without space, without permission to fully feel.

Stories of loss, identity, love that does not look clean or easy or predictable.

Stories of men who showed up anyway.

What does it mean to be a father when you are holding a child you know you have to let go of?

What does it mean to be a father when fear is so loud you can barely breathe… but you walk forward anyway because your child needs you to?

What does it mean to be a father when loving your child requires you to question everything you were taught to believe?

What does it mean to be a father when the fight is not one big moment… but a thousand quiet ones that no one sees?

These are the questions this series holds.

Not answers. Not advice. Just truth.

What is real…

Men grieve. Men question themselves.

Men feel fear in ways they do not always know how to express.

They carry guilt, helplessness, anger, and love all at the same time.

And somewhere along the way, many were taught to silence that.

To push it down, stay composed and keep moving.

To be “the strong one.”

But strength… is not what we think it is.

Strength is not the absence of emotion.

It is the willingness to stay present inside of it.

To walk into the room.
To make the impossible decision and keep showing up when there is no clear outcome.

To love your child not just in who you imagined they would be…
but in who they actually are.

This Fatherhood Series is not about putting men on a pedestal.

It is about letting them be human.

It is about giving space to the moments that made them who they are.

Because love, in these stories, is not simple.

It is not just pride and joy.

It is grief that does not leave.
Fear that sits in your chest.
Choosing to stay when everything in you wants to run.
Learning, unlearning, and showing up again.

It is imperfect, evolving and very real.

Maybe the version of fatherhood we need to talk about more is not the one that looks put together.

Maybe it is the one that feels.

Because when we tell these stories, something shifts.

Men see themselves in ways they have not before.
They realize they are not alone in what they are carrying.
They find language for things they have never said out loud.

And for everyone else…

We start to understand them differently and see the weight they have been holding.

We see the love that has been there all along, even when it did not look the way we expected.

This month is about that.

Not perfect fathers. Not polished versions of stories. Real ones.

These will stay with you and make you pause.
They open something in you, whether you are a father or not.

Because fatherhood is not just about raising children.

It is about who you become in the process.

Last night’s conversation with Bear Sage stayed with me.

Not because it was shocking or dramatic, but because it was honest.

The kind of honest that most people do not open up about.

We talked about what it means to be a parent when the beliefs you were raised with do not line up with the reality in front of you.

When your child comes to you and says this is who I am and you realize that loving them is not the question.

It is how you love them that matters.

Bear did not sit here and pretend he got it right from the beginning.

He talked about the discomfort.
The resistance and the moments where he did not know what to say or how to respond.

That is what made this conversation land.

This was not about perfection, it was about staying.

Staying in the conversation, in the relationship and long enough to see clearly.

There is a moment in the conversation where everything shifts.

Where it stops being about understanding and becomes about choice.

Do you hold onto what you were taught?
Or do you choose your child?

That is not a one time decision, it is something you make over and over again.

It’s in the way you speak, show up and the way you decide whether your child feels seen or questioned.

What Bear showed in this conversation is that protecting your children is not always what we think it is.

It is not control.
It is not forcing them into something that makes you comfortable.

It is learning how to stand with them in who they are, even when you are still figuring it out yourself.

That takes humility.

It takes self awareness and a willingness to let go of the version of your child that only ever existed in your own expectations.

Maybe the most important part of this conversation is this.

His children are not in crisis.

They know who they are.

The real question is whether the people around them are willing to accept it.

That is where the work is.

That is where the shift happens.

PART 2 of The Fatherhood Series.

This Wednesday, April 8th at 5:30pm PST I am sitting down with for a conversation that does not stay on the surface.

This story, Identity Crisis starts in a moment you cannot ignore, and then keeps unfolding in ways you do not expect.

Bear’s story begins with him trying to protect his children and then being taken away in handcuffs for it.

Two days after his daughter was born, he is pulled out of his home, separated from his family, and forced into a situation where everything he believed about doing the right thing gets tested.

That moment is not the whole story. It is just where it starts.

Years later, he is faced with something just as real, and in many ways just as difficult.

His children come to him and tell him who they are and it does not align with what he was raised to believe.

And now the definition of protection changes.

It is no longer just about keeping them safe from something outside of them.

It becomes about whether he is willing to stand with them in who they are, even when it challenges everything he was taught about identity, belief, and what it means to be a parent.

And he does not get it perfect, but that is what makes this conversation real.

We talk about the moments he struggled and the ways he got it wrong.
The internal conflict between what he believed and what his children needed from him.

Then something shifts and at some point, this stops being about understanding and becomes about choice.

Do you hold onto what you were taught?
Or do you choose your children?

This conversation is about fatherhood, but not in the way people usually talk about it.

It is about responsibility, unlearning and what it actually looks like to show up for your kids, not just when it is easy, but when it requires something from you.

It may require you to be uncomfortable, unfamiliar and asks you to grow.

More than anything, it comes back to this.

What does it really mean to protect your children? Because sometimes protection is not control.

It is acceptance and presence and choosing them exactly as they are.

Tonight, Jeff read his story out loud. Boy the tears were flowing for us both!

And there are some stories that do not leave you when they are over.
This was one of them.

He walked us through what it means to become a father…
and lose your child in the same moment.

Not once.
Twice.

He spoke about Davian.
He spoke about Jadon.

And you could feel it.

Not in a dramatic way.
Not in a way that tries to make it bigger than it already is.

Just in a real way.

The kind of real that makes you stop what you are doing and actually listen.

What stayed with me the most was not only the loss.
It was how honest he was about what came after.

The grief.
The confusion.
The pressure to be “the strong one.”

He said something that matters.

That people told him Cassie needed him to stay strong.
To hold it together.

But what about him?

What about the father who is also grieving?

That part does not get talked about enough.

And tonight, he talked about it.

He gave space to something that so many men carry but do not say out loud.

He also talked about faith.

Not in a way that had all the answers.
But in a way that felt like someone trying to make sense of something that does not make sense.

There was a moment where you could feel the shift.

Not away from grief.
But toward something else existing alongside it.

Hope.

Not the kind that erases what happened.
But the kind that allows you to keep living anyway.

That is what this conversation was.

Not a story about moving on.
But a story about carrying something that never leaves… and still finding a way forward.
